Trial and Error
Two pairs of all-knowing eyes observe the ebb and flow of Marshall Street foot traffic from above. Inside the old brick building, you’ll find Duke and Jo; barbers who have been serving the students and faculty of Syracuse University for 96 semesters. Duke and Jo have clipped and shaved the heads of doctors who first came to them as undergraduates. Through spot conversations, and enduring friendships, the barbers of Marshall Street have mastered the history of Syracuse University, and even created some of their own.
However, the quality hair cuts and barbershop banter won’t persist eternally. The number of modern salons has trumped the population of next-generation barbers; a trade and a lifestyle that seems to be on its way out. But Duke and Jo don’t see it that way-They watch from their perch, guardians of Marshall Street, awaiting next year’s class of students and those to come.
